Alan Parker’s acclaimed 1978 prison drama – adapted by Parker and Oliver Stone from Billy Haye’s 1977 memoir of the same name – is the powerful and at times brutal story of American student Hayes (Brad Davies), who is sent to a harsh Turkish prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of the country. The film won two Oscars (for Adapted Screenplay and for Giorgio Morodor’s Original
Score) and several BAFTAs (particularly for John Hurt’s supporting role) with the movie filmed almost entirely at Fort Saint Elmo in Valletta, Malta.
