As the waters rise in the American Deep South, two young people have to watch the only world they have known gradually vanish. Sandra Winther’s wonderfully atmospheric Lowland Kids (which counts Darren Aronofsky amongst its producers) follows siblings Howard and Juliette – who have lived alone since their parents died – as they witness changes in their home, at Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana, impacted by Hurricane Ida in 2021 and rising water levels. A gorgeously intimate film it sees the siblings having to deal with leaving their childhood house, as climate refugees in the American South.
