Set against the backdrop of a blistering hot Spanish summer, Rose (Fiona Shaw)
and her daughter Sofia (Emma Mackey) travel to Almeria to consult a healer to
try and diagnose Rose’s debilitating illness. With her mother more and more
demanding, Sofia feels increasingly trapped, but starts to shed her inhibitions
as she becomes entranced by the charms of free-spirited traveller Ingrid (the
ever intriguing Vicky Krieps). Based on Deborah Levy’s 2016 bestseller, the film
is beautifully adapted by writer-director Rebecca Lenkiewicz who wonderfully
captures the tense relationships and the very physical intensity of the scorching
summer weather.
