A contemporary take on a real life event, Gloria! Is loosely based on a period in the early 19th century when a group of women musicians living in a religious institution for orphan girls outside Venice are tasked with performing for the pope. A servant named Teresa (Galatea Bellugi) loves music and turns out to be a musical prodigy, with the young women eventually turning on the school’s director to perform their very own piece of music for an unsuspecting pope. Veering between joyous and dramatic, it is a charming and mischievous, and a musical pleasure.
