Some 24 years later, Ridley Scott returned to his Gladiator story (and to Malta) to develop the story of Lucius Verus Aurelius (impressively played by Paul Mescal), the exiled Prince of Rome who becomes a prisoner of war and fights as a gladiator for Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave who plots to overthrow the twin emperors. Up against killer sharks as well as other gladiators, Lucius has ijs own reasons for revenge. As with the original, Malta’s Fort Ricasoli stands in for Rome’s Colosseum.
